It’s time to show the skin on your body some true love. Here are some tips to create the standard of routine the skin on your body deserves.
Ceramides are the secret ingredient to getting healthy skin
Dermatologists and skincare experts swear by ceramides for healthy, hydrated skin, particularly as we age. Here’s why.
What are ceramides?
Ceramides are lipids, which are fatty acids that are produced in the sebaceous glands. They help to moisturise and strengthen the skin barrier. A healthy skin barrier helps seal in moisture and keep out aggressors.
What do they do?
Essentially, ceramides are the glue that holds our skin cells together – you can think of them like the grout between tiles or the mortar that holds brickwork together. They give the skin structure, stability, and protection.
The skin produces ceramides naturally (in fact, they make up half of your skin barrier), and so as an ingredient, they carry practically no risk of irritation or sensitisation.
As we age, ceramide levels in our skin drop. You lose an increasing amount of ceramides in your 30s and 40s which is why adding ceramides to your skincare routine as you age is necessary. Here’s what they will actually do for your skin:
- Locks-in moisture by strengthening the skin barrier
- Protects the skin against environmental aggressors and free radical damage
- Restores the skin barrier so that it functions at its best
- Makes the skin more tolerant of active ingredients, like acids
- Reduces visible signs of ageing
- Softens and smooths the skin
- Reduces the risk of inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, acne, and psoriasis
Power pairings ceramides + cholesterol
When it comes to ingredients, teamwork makes the dreamwork, and this is especially true for ceramides. Within the skin, cholesterol plays a huge role in keeping the skin looking plump and bouncy. Applying a lipid cocktail of ceramides and cholesterol to skin amplifies the benefits of both ingredients.
Ceramides + niacinamide
Ceramides improve the barrier function of the skin which improves the skin’s ability to keep itself hydrated. Niacinamide helps to protect the surface of skin against moisture loss by stimulating the skin’s natural production of ceramides and also greatly improves pore size and skin texture. When you combine the two together, the benefits of both complement each other – resulting in soft, glowing, even skin.
